Try to go when there is no moon and the milky way is directly overhead, magical! Slowly over the next hour, hundreds more were revealed and pointed out by extremely knowledgeable staff: Cassiopeia, the Pleiades, the Andromeda Galaxy; it really was mind-blowing. Kein Wunder also, dass sich hier die größte Sternwarte der Welt, sowie das leistungsfähigste Teleskop der Erde befinden. Arrive at the Visitor Center wearing jeans and a warm jacket ;)!The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station offers a terrific FREE stargazing program. First, the small van takes you, at mid-afternoon, to the Visitors Center at 9,200 feet elevation where you are regaled by a short talk on what you are about to see and the itinerary for the evening, and treated to something to eat. The program begins at 6pm with the film First Light, a documentary on Mauna Kea as both a cultural and an astronomical entity. I am sensitive to altitude and knew that the Visitor's Center was plenty high enough for me. Leider werden geführte Touren durch die 13 unterschiedlichen Observatorien für Besucher nicht angeboten. I can unsubscribe any time using the unsubscribe link at the end of all emails. The road is a little windy but completely paved. Stargazing on Mauna Kea was very high on our Big Island to-do list . They provide a lot of interesting information about the astronomy and the stars. From beaches, palm trees and +27C to pasture lands and +4C. Please see more pictures on my Mauna Kea page. They have two trails (10 minutes each, quite easy) starting at the visitor center, I recommend the one on the left, as it is the best sunset viewpoint of the mountain. At 7:00, the highly knowledgeable guides will invite you outside to look through a variety of telescopes that they have arranged to see different things in the night sky. The drive can be a bit scary if you have to drive through thick clouds but it is worth it. The high altitude affected my husband a little bit (wobbly legs), but I didn't feel any ill effects at all (I think the Visitor Station is at 9300').
